Sustainability is more than just a concept—it is a way of thinking, acting, and living that ensures a better future for generations to come. Schools play a crucial role in shaping this future, not only by educating students about sustainability but by embedding it into everyday practices. At its core, sustainability in schools means fostering responsible habits, encouraging environmental stewardship, and creating a culture where every decision considers long-term impact.
As the Senior Academic Head of GSG schools, the vision is to provide a sustainable learning environment where every dialogue, action, and collaborative experience cultivates a mindset of responsibility. Our goal is to empower students to become true champions of sustainability, integrating these principles into their daily lives and communities. This means going beyond theory and making sustainability an integral part of school culture.
It is not just about what is taught but how it is taught. Education should not only inform but inspire students to take meaningful action. Schools must create opportunities to engage students in projects that directly impact their communities, ensuring they understand the value of sustainability beyond textbooks. From reducing waste and conserving energy to rethinking consumption habits and advocating for green initiatives, the goal is to embed sustainability into the culture of learning.
Equally important is educating the broader community—teachers, staff, and parents—on what it truly takes to become responsible, sustainable members of society. This requires ongoing dialogue, collaboration, and a commitment to continuous learning and adaptation to emerging sustainability trends.
Over the past few months, our schools have made great progress. We celebrated Earth Day and World Environment Day, initiated recycling drives, partnered with local communities, and saw students lead impactful green projects. These experiences empower students to take ownership of sustainability and inspire change in their own circles.
We are excited to share our group’s latest Sustainability Report — a reflection of our progress, purpose, and people. Give it a read—we would love to hear your thoughts!
A major highlight of our sustainability calendar is the upcoming GED-MCOP 2025 (Global Excellence Day – Mock Conference of the Parties). This event gives students a platform to step into the shoes of climate negotiators, collaborate across campuses, and present practical, bold solutions for real-world environmental issues. The previous MCOP held in Singapore was a great success—students from various countries came together to engage in meaningful, action-oriented dialogue that left a lasting impression on all involved.
Global Excellence Day (GED) is another inspiring initiative that showcases the power of student-led innovation. In both the 2023 and 2024 editions, I had the honour of serving as a judge. I witnessed students from Japan, India, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, and the UAE present projects addressing issues like food waste, urban gardening, composting, and even creative ideas like plastic-eating organisms. Their dedication, some spanning over a year of work, reflected deep commitment and real-world thinking.
These events reinforce that sustainability is not a future goal—it is a present responsibility. At GSG, we are proud to nurture young leaders who are passionate about creating lasting impact. Through education, collaboration, and purposeful action, we are building a generation that not only learns about sustainability but lives it—every single day.
