OWIS Nanyang Launches Sustainability Initiative with CORA Smart Recycling Machine

OWIS Nanyang has taken an important step toward strengthening its sustainability efforts with the launch of a new recycling initiative on campus through the introduction of the CORA machine. This initiative is part of the CORA School Recycling League, an annual programme by CORA Environment that encourages schools across Singapore to support the nation’s zero-waste goals by educating students and promoting responsible recycling habits.

This League brings together more than 400 schools across Singapore, creating a platform where students can actively contribute to environmental conservation. Participating schools compete to achieve Bronze, Silver, or Gold Awards, recognising their commitment to recycling and sustainability.

In 2025, CORA introduced Smart REHubs, innovative recycling machines designed to make recycling more accessible, interactive, and measurable. OWIS Nanyang is proud to be one of only 100 schools in Singapore selected to use this smart recycling machine, reinforcing the school’s dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainable practices.

As part of this initiative, students across OWIS Early Childhood (EC) and Primary School (PS) Nanyang have been actively collecting used paper and plastic bottles and depositing them into the machine. The smart system helps track recycling activity while making the process engaging and visible for students.

Through this hands-on experience, students are learning how small, everyday actions can contribute to protecting the environment. The initiative not only raises awareness about waste reduction but also helps students develop lifelong habits of responsible recycling.

To further encourage participation, the recycling effort has been introduced as a friendly school-wide competition, motivating students to contribute actively. The current phase of the programme will continue until March 2026, after which Secondary School (SS) students will begin their recycling journey with the machine, expanding the initiative across the entire campus.

By integrating sustainability into daily school life, OWIS Nanyang continues to empower students to become responsible global citizens who understand the importance of caring for the environment and taking meaningful action for a more sustainable future.
