OWIS Nanyang Students Drive Sustainability: From Inquiry to Action

Empowering Young Changemakers: From Exploring Environmental Issues to Building a Thriving EcoGarden, OWIS Nanyang Students Lead the Way in Sustainability.

At OWIS Nanyang, students across grades are demonstrating their dedication to sustainability through creative and impactful projects. From inquiry-based learning in Grade 1 to collaborative action by Grade 12 and the EcoClub, their efforts highlight the importance of making choices that support the Earth’s resources.

Grade 1 embarked on an inquiry-driven journey to explore the central idea, "People make choices to support the sustainability of Earth’s resources." They engaged in mind-mapping activities to share their prior knowledge, which led to meaningful discussions on environmental issues such as deforestation, pollution, and climate change. Through research and group discussions, the young learners developed fact files on these issues and proposed sustainable actions. Their journey culminated in the creation of posters, presentations, and mini-projects designed to raise community awareness about sustainability. Along the way, they honed essential skills like communication, planning, and teamwork while fostering open-mindedness by respecting diverse perspectives.

Meanwhile, a dynamic partnership between Grade 12 students, through their CAS programme, and the EcoClub brought the OWIS EcoGarden to life. Over 15 students collaborated to transform upcycled tires into planters and fundraised for essential resources through bake sales. Beginning in September 2024, the Grade 12 team kickstarted the project, while the EcoClub took over after the October break, organising efforts and selecting chili, cilantro, and mint for the garden. These practical choices ensure that the garden’s produce can be harvested for school and EcoClub use.

Both projects exemplify how OWIS students are actively contributing to a sustainable future. Through inquiry, creativity, and teamwork, they are not only enhancing their understanding of environmental issues but also taking tangible steps to address them. These initiatives reflect the power of collaboration and the shared commitment of OWIS students to making a positive impact on the environment.
