GSG Pre-MCOP Session Success: Preparing the Next Generation of Climate Leaders

As the Global Schools Group (GSG) geared up for the highly anticipated GSG Mock COP 2024, the Pre-MCOP Sessions held from 2-4 September 2024 in the lead-up to the event have proven to be an invaluable experience for students and educators alike. These sessions, designed to deepen participants’ understanding of the UNFCCC COP processes, have brought together climate experts and youth leaders, creating a dynamic space for learning and collaboration.

The Pre-MCOP sessions were crafted with the aim of equipping young minds with the tools, knowledge, and skills necessary to engage in meaningful climate discussions. With generous support from key partners—IUCN Commission on Education and Communication (CEC), TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute), WWF, and YOUNGO—the sessions featured an impressive lineup of speakers who shared their expertise and experiences from various facets of the climate change landscape.

Key Insights from Esteemed Experts

Among the distinguished speakers was Ms. Ashmita Biswas, from TERI who offered an insightful overview of the UNFCCC, breaking down the complex mechanisms behind the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) and highlighting their critical role in global climate governance.

Dr. Vinod Mathur, a leading expert on biodiversity, and member of IUCN CEC captivated the audience with his extensive knowledge on climate change and the importance of effective negotiation strategies for impactful discussions. His session emphasised how biodiversity is inextricably linked to climate action, inspiring students to become stewards of the planet’s ecosystems.

Another key speaker, Dr. Stephan Singer, representing Climate Action Network International, brought high energy and passion to the sessions. Drawing from his rich experience with COP negotiations, he shared compelling stories that energized the youth and encouraged them to advocate for immediate climate action.

The Pre-MCOP sessions also featured Dr. Byju Pookkandy, who inspired the budding climate scientists with his vast knowledge, preparing them for the challenges ahead. Ms. Srishti Singh from UNICEF India discussed the organisation's ongoing efforts to safeguard the planet for future generations, highlighting the crucial role of youth in driving climate solutions.

Further enriching the sessions, Dr. Suchismita Mukhopadhyay, gave an eye-opening presentation on climate adaptation, disaster resilience, and international collaboration, shedding light on the critical role of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure in building a sustainable future. Her insights were especially poignant given the increasing frequency of climate-related disasters globally.

Youth Empowerment and Climate Advocacy

A highlight of the sessions was the involvement of Mr. Timothy Ogenyi, who introduced the youth advocacy platform YOUNGO, emphasising its role in amplifying young voices within the UNFCCC process. His presentation ignited a spark among students, motivating them to become active participants in climate advocacy.

Ms. Radhika Suri, the event strategist, played a pivotal role in ensuring a seamless and enriching experience for all participants. She also delivered an insightful session on SMART goals and negotiation strategies, equipping attendees with practical tools for impactful climate discussions.

“We are extremely grateful to our partners and speakers, whose expertise greatly enriched our sessions,” said Mr Rathin Khandhadia. “Together, we are equipping the next generation with the knowledge, leadership, and advocacy skills they need to play an active role in climate action.”

As the GSG Mock COP 2024 approaches, the energy and enthusiasm generated during these Pre-MCOP sessions is palpable. With young climate advocates now better equipped to engage in high-level discussions and policy-making, the event promises to be an even more impactful platform for youth-led climate solutions.
