Global Schools Group recently marked two significant milestones in its commitment to fostering innovation, creativity, and leadership among students: the fifth edition of Global Excellence Day (GED) and the inaugural GSG Mock COP (MCOP). The event was held between Sep 23-25 at GIIS SMART Campus Singapore, were aimed at empowering youth and addressing global challenges through education.
On Sept 23, 2024 Global Excellence Day celebrated its fifth edition, coinciding with GSG's Foundation Day. This year's theme, SITE—Sustainability, Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship—underscored the importance of preparing students for a future shaped by these key areas.
The event brought together 132 students from five countries—Singapore, Malaysia, India, the Philippines, and Japan—representing six prestigious GSG brands: Global Indian International School (GIIS), One World International School (OWIS), Regent International School, Glendale International School, Chinese International School Manila (CISM), and Domuschola International School Manila (DISM). Participants competed across three categories—Junior, Middle, and Senior—presenting 38 Quality Circle projects that addressed real-world challenges through innovative and sustainable solutions.
The in-person format facilitated deeper engagement, with a panel of industry experts and GSG leaders serving as judges. Their insights provided valuable feedback while emphasising the importance of striving for excellence in all pursuits. Students were inspired to embrace critical thinking, teamwork, and a commitment to quality, gaining invaluable experience that translates into tangible solutions for future challenges.
Following GED, the GSG Mock COP, held from September 24-25, gathered around 90 students and 18 teacher facilitators for a simulation of the UN Climate Change Conference. This initiative aimed to enhance youth climate engagement and foster diverse perspectives in shaping global climate policies amid a pressing climate crisis.
Participants took on the roles of country and organisational delegates, providing a unique opportunity for hands-on involvement in climate action discussions. Partners such as IUCN CEC, YOUNGO, WWF, and TERI contributed their expertise, enriching the experience with knowledge in conservation, youth leadership, education, and sustainability.
A highlight of MCOP was the collaboration among students, who were mixed into teams from different schools and countries, fostering a rich exchange of ideas. UN Youth Climate Champion for COP 29, Ms Leyla Hasanova, commended GSG for its efforts in empowering youth during her inaugural address, urging students to embrace the "G.S.G" method: Get educated, Seek innovation, and Guide by example in their sustainability journeys.
An engaging panel discussion titled "Solving Climate Change Together: A 360-Degree Approach" featured leading experts, including GSG CEO Mr Rajeev Katyal and representatives from Schneider Electric, WWF, IIED, and NUS. They shared invaluable experiences and advice for aspiring sustainability advocates.
The event culminated in negotiation sessions where teams addressed critical issues like greenhouse gas reduction, climate finance, and adaptation strategies. Students showcased impressive preparedness and knowledge, ultimately drafting a joint declaration and action plan, marking the success of this impactful initiative.
Global Excellence Day and the Mock COP reflect GSG’s unwavering dedication to nurturing a generation of leaders equipped to tackle global challenges. These initiatives enrich the educational experience and empower students to take charge of their futures, ensuring a sustainable and innovative world for all. As GSG continues to champion excellence in education, it inspires its students to lead with purpose and vision in an ever-evolving landscape.
